Police Chase, Shoot Suspect

Officers say they recovered gun at scene

Chicago Police shot a suspect during a chase in the East Chatham neighborhood Monday night.

The incident happened in the 800-block of East 87th Place around 11:20pm, according to a Chicago Police News Affairs release.

Officers spotted a group of people "congregating" near 8700-block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the area known for gangs and drug dealing, said police.

They approached, but one suspect holding a gun ran. He dropped the gun but picked it up. He pointed it at one of the officers during the chase, said police.

Then, the man encountered a second officer in an alley and aimed his gun at him twice. That officer fired and hit the suspect, according to the News Affairs statement.

Police arrested the man and recovered a gun at the scene.

He was taken to the hospital in unknown condition.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
