Missing Aurora Woman Charged With Kidnapping, Sex Assault

Laureth May, 29, and her three young children went missing last month

Cicero Police on Wednesday formally charged an Aurora mother accused of fleeing to Florida with her three kids and a former student.

Laureth May, 29, faces kidnapping and sexual assault charges, police said. May and her three young children went missing last month.

Florida State Troopers found May and 17-year-old Destiny Gruba during a traffic stop in Port St. Lucie on March 20. May’s three little boys were also in the vehicle. Gruba was reported missing on Feb. 15.

“Sexual assault of a teenager is a very serious offense,” Cicero Police Chief Bernard Harrison said in a statement. “Had the offender been a male, this tragic incident would have made national headlines. We’re just happy that we were able to locate the young teenage girl and return her to her family.”

Police said the 40-day investigation revealed May began teaching at Acacia Academy in LaGrange Highlands in September 2011. They believe she developed a sexual relationship with an underage student sometime in December of that year.

May waived extradition in Florida and was transported to Illinois.

She is currently being held at the Cook County Jail on $500,000 cash bond.
