Chicago police arrested a man they said tried boarding a Greyhound bus early Wednesday with a gun.

Bus station personnel told police they became suspicious when the man left the station at 630 W. Harrison St. after personnel announced a security check on the bus, according to the Chicago Tribune.

When police checked a garbage can outside the station, they said they found a black leather bag with an unloaded handgun inside. The man admitted to police he tried to get rid of the bag, police told the paper.

The man said he traveled from Lansing, Mich., and was on his way to California.
