At least 20 people have been shot, one fatally, in attacks across the city over the first two days of Thanksgiving weekend, according to Chicago Police.
The fatal shooting happened about 12:25 a.m. Friday, when officers on patrol near Harrison and Central Park Avenue in the West Side Homan Square neighborhood heard gunfire and saw someone standing over another person and firing a gun, police said. The officers got out of their squad car, “engaged the offender” and fatally shot him, according to police, who said the person had shot two other people, one of whom died.
The other victim was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm. The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed one adult was pronounced dead at the scene, but did not immediately have information on the other death. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the officers’ use of force.
A night earlier, a CPD sergeant fatally shot a 19-year-old man in West Englewood after the sergeant said he saw the man point a gun at him twice during a foot chase, but no weapon had been found as of Thursday night.
The latest nonfatal shooting happened Friday morning in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side. A 26-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the abdomen about 7:40 a.m. in the 200 block of East 121st Place, according to police. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition.
More than six hours earlier, a man was shot in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side. Someone shot the 24-year-old man in the arm and leg about 1 a.m. as he walked through the 200 block of West 109th Place, police said. His condition was stabilized at Roseland Community Hospital.
Late on Thanksgiving night, two men were shot inside an Austin neighborhood home on the West Side. About 11:45 p.m. Thursday, someone came in through the back door of the home in the 1600 block of North Latrobe and opened fire, hitting a 32-year-old man in the chest, abdomen and thigh, and a 35-year-old twice in the leg, police said. The younger man was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, and the older in good condition to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park.
