Phone Video Shows Fight Preceding Security Guard's Death

Police still considering charges in case

A cell phone video of a fight that preceded the death of a Thornwood High School security guard Thursday may help investigators determine if charges will be filed in the case.

Richard Cowser, 54, was breaking up a fight between two senior girls at the South Holland school when he fell or was pushed against a locker. Paramedics were called after he had difficulty breathing and he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Student Tyshaan Boyd witnessed the fight and shot it on his cell phone.

"He jumped in the middle of them and then he hit the locker and he just slowly fell," Boyd said.

Boyd said he watched Cowser collapse in disbelief, and explains what happened next to the man student affectionately called "Hulk" Cowser.

"His head just turned purple," said Boyd. "I was just like this is crazy, it didn't even seem real."

Police are reviewing videos from the scene and talking to witnesses and the girls involved in the fight.

Officials say an autopsy performed on Cowser Friday was inconclusive.

Students tell NBC 5 that the two girls were best friends who were fighting over a pair of jeans that weren't returned.
