A report of a person with a gun on Indiana University Bloomington’s campus Tuesday evening was “likely a false alarm," university police say.
The alert went out about 7:32 p.m. local time. A student told police they thought they saw a person with a handgun exiting Hine Hall near the Union Street Apartments, said Andy Stephenson, captain of operations for the Indiana University police.
Officers searched the area and nearby buildings but found nothing, Stephenson said. The police received only the one complaint and no shots were fired, he added.
A review of security footage found a person that fit the description given by the concerned student, but that individual was not seen holding a gun on camera, according to Stephenson.
"Investigation is ongoing," a follow-up message read. "Threat is no longer imminent. Resume normal routine but remain vigilant."

The original message told those on campus to take shelter and to stay put until authorities gave the all clear.

“If you are on campus, trust your instincts and take safe shelter in the nearest available room,” the first alert read. “Lock the door if possible. Remain in place until the police or a campus administrator known to you gives the FINAL UPDATE. Call 911 if you have information about the armed person. If you are not on campus, stay away. Follow instructions from university officials or local authorities.”
