Police on Wednesday morning were investigating a fatal accident in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood that involved an on-duty officer in an unmarked squad car.
According to the department, the squad car was eastbound on the 2800 block of East 79th Street at about 1:15 a.m. when the driver hit a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a man in his 60s who was wearing all dark clothing, was pinned under the vehicle and was later pronounced dead on the scene.
It wasn't immediately clear if the man was crossing the street or walking in the street, but many people were viewed walking in the streets because of snow-covered sidewalks and high snowbanks.
Some of the street lights in the area were out at the time of the crash. A crew from ComEd was later called to the scene and the lights were back on by 6 a.m.
Streetlights in the area were reported being out since at least January 29, according to city records. Other requests for repairs to streetlights on that block, from March 2014 and June 2012, were completed within two days, records show.
As NBC5 Investigates reported in two separate stories last summer, many residents have been reporting similar outages of entire blocks of streetlights – especially in areas of the West Side and the South Side, where Wednesday's crash occurred.
There was no additional information provided by midday about the victim or the officer involved.
