A “legendary” dime, considered one of the rarest in existence, has sold at a Chicago auction for more than $1.3 million.
The 1894-S Barber Dime, one of only nine believed to be in existence, made its first appearance in 31 years at an auction with Stack’s Bowers Galleries.
The dime sold for $1.32 million during the World’s Fair of Money in Chicago.
“The 1894-S Dime is an iconic American rarity, and our firm and its employees have handled all nine known examples in our nearly 90-year history,” Brian Kendrella, president of Stack’s Bowers Galleries, said in a statement. “We are very excited to have found a great new home for this particular example, last offered in our sale rooms in 1953, and I’m sure its new owner is just as excited to possess it.”
All nine 1894-S Barber dimes have traditionally spent years in tightly held collections, according to the gallery.
The dime that sold in Chicago was once owned by famed Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss, an avid coin collector.
