Great-Grandmother Among 39 Shot, One Fatally, in Weekend Violence

Among those injured was an 81-year-old great-grandmother who was mourning her youngest daughter whose funeral was Saturday

Weekend shootings in Chicago left at least one person dead and 38 others injured, including a great-grandmother who was shot just after she attended her daughter's wake.

The first fatal shooting happened early Saturday in the University Village neighborhood. A 24-year-old man was found unresponsive on the sidewalk around midnight in the 1300 block of West Hastings. The man had been shot in the chest and shoulder, police said.

The man was reported dead at the scene. A police source said the victim was a documented gang member.

Additional details were not available.

On Friday evening, an 81-year-old great-grandmother and her 34-year-old grandson were shot while their family gathered to mourn the death of another family member. 

Iola and Sylvester Burress were standing on a porch in the 7800 block of South Carpenter in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood at about 5 p.m. when a white SUV pulled up and people inside began firing shots. Iola Burress was struck four times in the wrist, lower belly and arm, according to her great-grandson. Sylvester Burress was hit near his buttocks.

While their family attended the funeral for Iola Burress' youngest daughter Saturday, the great-grandmother underwent surgery at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she and her grandson were transported after the shooting.

At least 36 others were wounded in shootings citywide since 5 p.m. Friday:

  • Two men, ages 24 and 28, were shot at about 7:25 p.m. Friday in the 7200 block of South Bell in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, police said. The two men were driving in separate cars when shots rang. The 24-year-old was shot in the arm and taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where his condition stabilized. The other man was shot in the leg and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. His condition was also stable.
  • A 33-year-old man was shot at about 9:50 p.m. Friday in the 11900 block of South Wallace in the West Pullman neighborhood, police said. The man was standing on the sidewalk when another man fired shots from an alley. The victim was struck in the ankle and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 25-year-old man was shot in the lower back at about 10:40 p.m. Friday in the 6700 block of South Cornell in the South Shore neighborhood, police said. The man was walking in the block when he heard gunfire and realized he'd been shot. He took himself to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where his condition stabilized. A police source said the victim is a documented gang member.
  • A 25-year-old man was shot in the head at about 10:50 p.m. Friday in the 7400 block of South Wentworth in the Park Manor neighborhood, police said. The man was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital in critical condition.
  • A 58-year-old woman was struck in the leg by a stray bullet at about 12:15 a.m. Saturday in the 200 block of West 38th Place in the Armour Square neighborhood, police said. The woman was walking on the sidewalk when she heard shots and felt pain. She was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, where her condition stabilized. 
  • A 38-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were shot at about 12:15 a.m. Saturday in the 100 block of South Leamington in the Austin neighborhood, police said. The two were standing outside when a man got out of a nearby SUV and opened fire. Both were struck in the right foot and taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where their conditions stabilized.
  • Two men, ages 22 and 23, were shot at about 1 a.m. Saturday in the 3600 block of West Polk in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said. The men were standing outside when a dark-colored sedan drove by and someone inside opened fire. The 22-year-old man was shot in the head and taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital in critical condition. The 23-year-old suffered a graze wound to his left thigh and took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital.
  • A 29-year-old man was shot in the buttocks at about 1:20 a.m. Saturday in the 100 block of South California in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said. The man was standing in the block when he heard shots and felt pain. He took himself to Rush University Medical Center.
  • Two men, ages 21 and 24, were shot at about 2:55 a.m. Saturday in the 8800 block of South Princeton in the Chatham neighborhood, police said. The men were standing outside when another man walked up and opened fire before running off. The 24-year-old was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to his forearm. The 21-year-old was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center with a gunshot wound to the ankle.
  • An 18-year-old woman was shot at about 5:25 a.m. Saturday in the 1700 block of North Western in the West Town neighborhood. She was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where her condition stabilized.
  • A 25-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were shot at about 10:55 a.m. Saturday in the 3900 block of South Calumet in the Bronzeville neighborhood, police said. The 25-year-old was struck in the hand and back and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition. The teenager suffered a graze wound to his torso and took himself to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition.
  • A 26-year-old man and a teenage boy, whose age has not been released, were shot multiple times Saturday afternoon in the 1400 block of North Springfield in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said. The boy was struck three times in the groin, and the 26-year-old was shot in the abdomen, leg and hip. They were both taken to Norwegian American Hospital in serious condition.
  • A 24-year-old man was shot in the leg at about 1:50 p.m. Saturday in the 7400 block of South Princeton in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, police said. He was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center in fair condition.
  • A 21-year-old man was shot in the abdomen at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the 4300 block of South Oakenwald in the Kenwood neighborhood, police said. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 46-year-old man was shot in the leg at about 4 p.m. in the 1500 block of South Kolin in the North Lawndale neighborhood, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.
  • A 35-year-old man was shot multiple times in the abdomen and leg at about 9:05 p.m. Saturday in the 2500 block of South Harding in the Little Village neighborhood.
  • A 28-year-old man was shot nine times at about 9:07 p.m. Saturday in the 4600 block of North Malden in the Uptown neighborhood.
  • A 52-year-old man was shot in the leg at about 12:35 a.m. Sunday in the 900 block of West 116th Place in the West Pullman neighborhood.
  • A 30-year-old man was shot in the wrist at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday in the 3700 block of South Wentworth in the Bronzeville neighborhood.
  • A 25-year-old woman was shot in the back at about 1:20 a.m. Sunday in the 2400 block of West 62nd Street in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood.
  • A 48-year-old man was shot in the thigh at about 1:35 a.m. Sunday in the 8200 block of South Kimbark in the Avalon Park neighborhood.
  • A 33-year-old woman was shot in the arm at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday during a party in the 900 block of North Harding in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
  • Two women, both 25, were shot at about 2:50 a.m. Sunday during a house party in the 900 block of West 52nd Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
  • A 31-year-old man was shot in the cheek at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday during a domestic fight in a home in the 5300 block of South Campbell in the Gage Park neighborhood.
  • A 31-year-old man was shot in the leg at about 3:20 a.m. Sunday in the 6100 block of South King Drive in the Washington Park neighborhood.
  • A 22-year-old man was shot in the arm at about 12:20 p.m. Sunday in the 400 block of West 65th Place in the Englewood neighborhood.
  • A 23-year-old man was shot in the arm and back in a shooting around 6 p.m. in the 7000 block of South Emerald Avenue. The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition. Police said the victim was a documented gang member and convicted felon. Details surrounding the shooting were not immediately available. 
  • Just before 8:15 p.m., a 25-year-old man was shot during a physical altercation in the 7300 block of South Claremont Avenue. Police said the man was transported to Holy Cross Hospital by a friend and later taken Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition.
  • A 22-year-old man was shot in the leg aruond midnight in the 6200 block of South Bishop Street. The man was walking on the block when he heard shots and felt pain, police said. He was transported to Stroger Hospital for treatment.
