1 Robber Dead, 1 Escaped in Bridgeport Holdup

Chicago police shot and killed one of two people they said were trying to rob a store in Bridgeport early Wednesday morning.

Officers driving past the JJ Peppers location in the 3100 block of South Union Avenue said they saw two masked men in hooded sweatshirts walk into the store. The officers went into the building and found one person with a gun near the front of the store and another near the back of the store.

One of the robbers opened fire and the officers returned shots, killing him.  He was later identified as Jeff Wilson, 30, of the 10000 block of South Normal Avenue.

The other man remained at the back of the store, police said. Until about 6 a.m. police weren't sure if he was still inside.

A SWAT team was called to the scene to search for the him.  They used concussion grenades to gain entry, officials said. Once inside, they found that the store was empty.

Police said the second robber escaped, possibly running out the back.
