Chicago police shot a man who they say was holding a woman at gunpoint Wednesday night on the city’s Near West Side.
Officers were performing a well-being check in the 2000 block of West Washington Boulevard about 6:30 p.m. Upon further investigation, police discovered the incident was in fact a home invasion, authorities said.
Officers entered the residence where was holding a 23-year-old woman at gunpoint. When officers approached the man “an armed encounter” occurred and a police officer shot the man in the lower body, authorities said. The man shot the woman in the arm, police said.
Police said a weapon was recovered from the scene and the man was taken to hospital where his condition had stabilized. The woman was taken to the hospital in good condition.
The use of force investigation is under review from the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days—as is customary following police-involved shootings.
An officer was also transported to the hospital to be evaluated after the shooting but was uninjured.
