Octogenarian Fights With Knife-Wielding Burglar

Attacker knocked, attacked woman when she answered

An 88-year-old woman was hurt while struggling with a masked man who broke into her home in the Bronzeville neighborhood Friday night, put a knife to her throat and robbed her.

The woman was in her home at 8:30 p.m. Friday in the 3500 block of South Rhodes Avenue when she answered a knock at her door and a masked man forced himself inside, police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said.

The man put a knife to her throat and then they began struggling, Kubiak said.

He hit her in the face, bruising her forehead and lip, Kubiak said. The woman’s finger was also cut.

The man stole a bag of coins, Kubiak said.

The woman was treated and released from Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, Kubiak said.

No one was in custody and Area Central detectives are investigating.
