Family Displaced After Overnight Fire Destroys Home in Suburban Oak Park

A family was displaced from their home early Wednesday after a fire in suburban Oak Park.

The Oak Park Fire Department was called to the 700 block of South Humphrey Avenue around 1:30 a.m. to find a fire in the home’s second-floor attic.

The three family members inside made it out safely, fire officials said, and were even able to save some Christmas presents from the flames.

It is still unclear what started the fire, but as the temperature drops firefighters said the risk to start a fire goes up with many homeowners turning to space heaters and other potentially dangerous ways to heat their homes.

The family living in the home was displaced due to smoke and water damage from the blaze.

Fire officials say the family is staying with neighbors while the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
