O'Hare Opens New $516 Million Runway

O'Hare International Airport debuted a new runway and air traffic control tower, all part of its $9 billion effort to modernize its airfield.

The runway will initially handle about 5 percent of all flights, which is about 121 a day. Officials say the goal is to increase capacity and reduce delays.

Some say Chicagoans and suburbanites who live in the path of jets that are now arriving from the east should brace themselves for more noise.

Jefferson Park resident Colleen Mulcrone is part of a group that's fighting for fair allocation of runways as one way to address the noise issues at the airport.

“Even people not directly in flight plan will be impacted because of the way they will approach and line up,” Mulcrone said.

State Senator John Mulroe says the new runway is adding more stress on the residents of the 10th district.

“We recognize the airport is vital to the economy,” Mulroe said. “It doesn't mean we forget about the people dramatically impacted by the noise.”
