1 Dead, 14 Wounded in Weekend Violence

One man is dead and at least 14 people wounded from shootings throughout the city between Friday evening and Sunday morning.

The weekend’s one fatal shooting took place on Saturday afternoon, when a 20-year-old man was shot in the chest in the South Shore neighborhood.

The man -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Anthony Bagsby -- was shot multiple times in the chest in the 2600 block of East 79th Street just before 1 p.m., according to police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien.

Bagsby, of the 7400 block of South Shore Drive, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:33 p.m.

The weekend violence began at 7:40 p.m. Friday in the 9000 block of South Colfax Avenue when a 19-year-old man was walking, heard shots and felt pain, police said. The man was taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the leg.

About 11 p.m. Friday, a 19-year-old man was shot in the head on the Near West Side.

A witness saw the man drive a vehicle into a parking lot in the 2600 block of West Jackson Boulevard and began unloading items from the back, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said. A dark vehicle, possibly an SUV, entered the parking lot and circled the first vehicle before pulling up behind it and someone inside that second vehicle fired multiple shots in the victim’s direction, striking him in the head, police said.

The victim was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition.

A man was wounded early Saturday in a drive-by shooting in the Lawndale neighborhood.

The man was shot about 4:54 a.m. in the 2300 block of South Homan Avenue, Perez said.

The 22-year-old man was standing with his girlfriend on the corner of Homan Avenue and 24th Street when a black SUV drove by and opened fire, Perez said. The man was struck in the leg but his girlfriend was not injured. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, Perez said.

A 17-year-old boy was critically wounded when he was shot in the back in the Logan Square neighborhood Saturday night.

The teen was shot about 11:26 p.m. in the 2220 block of North Drake Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines.

He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, Gaines said.

Early Sunday, a 17-year-old boy was critically wounded and an 18-year-old woman also injured when they were shot in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

The shooting happened about 12 a.m. at the intersection of 70th Street and Halsted Street, police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.

The victims were standing outside with a group of people when someone walked up and fired shots, Greer said.

The 17-year-old was shot in the head and taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, Greer said. The 18-year-old woman was shot in the leg and taken in good condition to Saint Bernard Hospital.

An 18-year-old man was seriously wounded when he was shot in the chest early Sunday in the South Side Fuller Park neighborhood.

The shooting happened about 3:20 a.m. in the 4300 block of South Wallace Street, Gaines said. The victim, who was shot two times in the chest, was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital, Gaines said.
