No One Hurt in CHA High-Rise Fire

Much of building not evacuated

A kitchen fire in a Chicago Housing Authority high-rise was quickly brought under control Sunday morning.

Around 9:25 a.m., an EMS Plan I  and a still-and-box alarm were called for a fire at 6401 S. Yale Ave., according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.  The EMS plan automatically sends five ambulances to the scene.

According to the CHA’s Web site, the Vivian Carter Apartments are located at that address. They are described as 1-bedroom apartments for seniors.

Langford said the fire burned in a kitchen on one of the higher floors and was out at 9:40 a.m., when the alarm was canceled and the plan secured.

The floor the fire started on was evacuated, but not the entire building , Langford said.

No injuries have been reported immediately.
