Study Shows Chicago No. 1 in Arrestee Drug Use

87 percent of arrestees in Chicago test positive for drug use

Word from the White House is that more people arrested in Chicago are on drugs than are arrestees in other major U.S. cities.

A new report from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy states that 87 percent of suspects arrested in Chicago test positive for drugs. Additionally, a Chi-Town Daily News article says, heroin use is up 45 percent in Chicago since 2007.

The report, called the "2008 Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring Program," studied male suspects in 10 major cities.

"Not only does this new report reaffirm a strong link between drug use and crime, but it also tells us that we must concentrate our resources on programs that have been proven to break the cycle of drugs and crime," Gil Kerlikowske, director of National Drug Control Policy, said in a statement.
