New Year's Hit-And-Run Victim Fights For Life

Northwest Indiana man suffers major injuries after a hit-and-run accident

A hit-and-run accident over the weekend in Highland left a 27-year-old man fighting for his life.

Police say Mitchell Heeringa was walking near 80th Place and Broadway at about 2 a.m. New Year's morning when a vehicle struck him, according to the Northwest Indiana Times.

Heeringa underwent emergency brain surgery after the crash.

Amanda Heeringa, Mitchell's sister, told Northwest Indiana Times her brother remains in critical condition. He suffered three fractured vertebrae along with bruises of the brain and lungs.

A white four-door Nissan occupied by two males and a female was reportedly seen leaving the scene, but police are uncertain if the vehicle was involved in the crash.

No arrests have been made.
