New Documentary on Cubs Fandom to Air Thursday Night

As much as the Chicago Cubs’ World Series championship meant to the team, it meant even more to the fans that had been supporting the club throughout their 108 year drought, and a new documentary debuting Thursday night on MLB Network captures those emotions perfectly.

The documentary, called “Joy in Wrigleyville,” features Cubs fans from all walks of life as they lived and died with the Cubs throughout their World Series run earlier this year. Narrated by John Cusack, the film hits all of the standard notes for any documentary about the team (including the Steve Bartman incident, recounted by recording artist Billy Corgan), but in the end, it’s about the connections that the team helped create in the lives of its fans.

Arguably the most powerful moments of the film come from fans discussing what the championship run would have meant to loved ones. A great example comes from the Telhami family, who lost their matriarch Ginny Iversen between Games 2 and 3 of the World Series. Her story, told beautifully by Wright Thompson in a profile for ESPN the Magazine after the team clinched the championship, tugs at the heartstrings even more on celluloid, and fans will certainly be able to relate to the highs and lows that family felt as the Cubs romped their way to victory.

For any Cubs fan that was around Wrigley Field as the team won, was packed shoulder-to-shoulder with other fans along the championship parade route, or was able to head out to a cemetery to share the victory with the loved ones that instilled a love of the team in their hearts, the documentary will bring all of those emotions flooding back, and the ride will feel as exhilarating and emotional as it did the first time.

“Joy in Wrigleyville” will air on MLB Network on Thursday night at 7 p.m., and will re-air at 10 p.m.
