A naked carjacking suspect who was fatally shot by law enforcement officers in southeastern Wisconsin was wanted for a shooting that occurred the same day in Milwaukee, authorities said Thursday.
The Waukesha County Sheriff's Office identified the man as Randy Engstrom, 34, of Milwaukee. Sgt. Timothy Gauerke, a spokesman for the Milwaukee Police Department, confirmed in an email to The Associated Press that Engstrom was wanted in a shooting that critically wounded a man early Tuesday.
Authorities say Engstrom took off his clothes and carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint at a park and ride in the Milwaukee suburb of Pewaukee later that day. The carjacking victim was not hurt. Engstrom then headed west on Interstate 94 and led officers on a 25-mile chase that ended outside an Arby's restaurant in Johnson Creek.
The sheriff's office says Engstrom ran toward the restaurant with a gun and was shot by a Waukesha County sheriff's deputy and a Delafield police officer when he ignored orders to stop.
A witness told WISN-TV the suspect could not get inside the restaurant and fired a shot before officers shot him, but authorities have not addressed that.
Engstrom was sought in a shooting that wounded 27-year-old Anthony Figueroa on Milwaukee's south side early Tuesday, WITI-TV reported. Family members told the station they had no idea why Figueroa, who was struck in the head, was shot.
The names of the officers who shot Engstrom have not been released. The deputy is a 19-year veteran and the police officer has 22 years of experience. Both were placed on paid administrative leave, Waukesha County Sheriff Eric Severson has said.
