NIU's Butler in Critical Condition After Shooting

The football player was shot Tuesday night off-campus in DeKalb

An Northern Illinois football player was in critical condition Wednesday after being shot off-campus in DeKalb.

Devon Butler, a junior linebacker, was transported to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford early Wednesday morning after the Tuesday night shooting, the school said in a statement.

“All our thoughts and prayers as a team and as a coaching staff right now are with Devon,” said NIU Head Coach Dave Doeren, who is with Butler at the hospital, in the statement.

“He’s a member of our family and the most important thing is his health.”

Doeren has cancelled all football team activities, including Thursday morning’s spring football practice, until further notice.

The City of DeKalb Police Department is investigating the shooting.
