Mysterious Yellow Ice Falls on Suburban Homeowner's Rooftop

A five-foot-long chunk of yellow ice crashed onto the roof of an Elk Grove Village house Monday morning, the homeowner said—but where it came from and why it’s yellow remains a mystery for now.

Dawn Scarpulla said the ice crashed onto the roof around 10:30 a.m.

"When it landed, it made a terrible clatter," she told the Daily Herald.

Police told her to have a roofer assess the home for damage—but no one seems to know where exactly the ice came from.

Scarpulla says she thinks the ice might have come from a passing plane—but a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration doesn’t think that’s correct.

The spokesman told NBC 5 ice from plane lavatories is blue, not yellow. He added that it’s difficult to speculate on what it might be without having an expert analyse it.

Elk Grove police would need to contact the FAA’s flight standards office and bring in the sample for that to happen.

Calls to the Elk Grove Police Department were not immediately returned.

Meanwhile, Scarpulla says she noticed a ceiling crack after the mystery ice—so she’s keeping the sample until it can be tested.
