Multi-Car Freight Train Derailment Reported in Aurora

A multi-car freight train derailed in west suburban Aurora Thursday afternoon, police said.

Roughly six to eight cars derailed off the eastbound train just before 2:30 p.m. in the area of River and Third, according to a BNSF spokesperson. Drivers were urged to avoid the area.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the derailment, according to police.

Police say the Aurora Animal Care and Control Center and a business in the 600 block of South River Street were evacuated following the incident.

Metra said the derailment was not expected to impact train service on its BNSF line, but that traffic in the area would likely return to normal Thursday evening.

Further information wasn't immediately available.
