Man Fatally Shoots Wife, Young Daughter in Little Village: Police

Woman, 5-year-old girl found slain in their home in Little Village

Chicago Police say a man killed his estranged wife and young daughter Tuesday before trying to take his own life.

Their bodies were found inside a home in the 2800 block of South Kildare in the Little Village neighborhood, police said. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed 28-year-old Kelly Coca and 5-year-old Carla Eguez died from gunshot wounds to the head.

When police arrived they also found a 27-year-old man with self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head, but he was alive and rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he was in critical condition.

Police confirmed the man is Coca's husband and Carla's father.

Distraught loved ones could be seen outside the home.

"We're a small family, a family of 15, we're a very small family and we're just in shock," said the victims' cousin, Claudio Cossio.

"She's innocent," said Diane Karlik, whose son went to school with Carla. "If they had problems that's between them, she was innocent."

One neighbor who asked to remain anonymous told NBC Chicago he was shocked since the young family was often seen around the neighborhood.

"Everybody knows that family. They're always out front having a good time. They go to church right here in the next block. Everybody knows them."

Family members told NBC Chicago the husband was an army veteran who had been estranged from his wife and daughter and living in Florida. Although the marriage was troubled, the family never expected it to come to this.

"We thought he could've done something but we never thought he would actually come to the point of killing somebody," Cossio said. "His own daughter."

Police continue to investigate.
