Mother Took Baby She Killed Shopping: Prosecutors

The suburban Chicago mother is charged with killing her 3 month-old son

A south suburban woman is charged with killing her infant son, then carrying the baby’s dead body around for hours.

Toyrianna Smith, 20, allegedly beat and suffocated her 3-month-old son, Ken Blackman Jr., last Wednesday night at a friend’s Harvey home when the baby wouldn’t stop crying, the Sun-Times reports.

The next morning, prosecutors say she dressed the boy and took him shopping, strapped to her chest in a BabyBjorn carrier.

Later, a neighbor called 911 when they suspected the baby wasn’t breathing and saw blood on the child’s blanket. The baby was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

Doctors say Ken Jr. had been dead for eight to 14 hours.

Smith was charged with first-degree murder. A Cook County judge ordered her held Monday on $1 million bond.
