Mother Demands Answers After Son, 6, Loses Fingertip at School

Six-year-old Jontae is bandaged and doing better, but his mom says she’s still trying to get to the bottom of what happened to her son--and how he lost part of his finger.

"I think it's gone forever," he told NBC 5 Friday.

Monday afternoon his mother, Jamilia Agnew, says she got a call from Frazier Preparatory Academy saying her son had been in an accident at school.

"They said his hand was slammed in a door," she recalled.

Agnew says she drove to the hospital and found her son bleeding in the waiting room.

"They didn’t tell me until I got there," she said. "Oh, he is missing the top of his finger."

The top line of his finger past the nail and cuticle is gone.

Agnew says officials at St. Anthony Hospital told her they couldn’t help Jontae, so she she took him to University of Illinois Chicago where she learned it was too late to re-attach the tip of his finger.

"The limb had died by then, they couldn't," she said.

Agnew says it took four days to get this incident report from the school.

"They won't speak to me," she told NBC 5.

She says it still doesn’t give her a clear picture of what happened to her son.
