Suicidal Mother Charged with Poisoning Son: Prosecutors

The child has been released from the hospital, prosecutors say

An Elmhurst mother has been charged with trying to kill her son in a murder-suicide plot.

Cheryl Luchetta, 41, is facing attempted murder charges in the poisoning of her 7-year-old son last Wednesday, said DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin.

Luchetta gave her a child a mix of Valium, Diazepam and Tylenol PM. She then slit her throat, blacked out and woke up the next morning to find her son unresponsive, said Berlin.

Elmhurst police officers arrived. The child received hospital treatment and was later released.

"Any crime committed against a child tears at your heartstrings," said Berlin. "What makes this case particularly disturbing is the allegation that this young boy was intentionally poisoned by his own mother."

The boy's mother remains in custody at a secured hospital facility in DuPage County.

She is expected in bond court after her release.
