Morning Tribute Honors Late Police Officer

Sounds of bagpipes and drums filled the air

In the cold morning air, the Chicago Police Department honored the life of one of its own.

Dozens of police officers and firefighters held a memorial for Sgt. Alan Haymaker early Tuesday morning.

They gathered on southbound Lake Shore Drive at the Irving Park Road exit ramp, facing east toward the 4100 N. Lake Shore Drive location where the 21-year veteran died in a crash while responding to a burglary call in February 2010.

The crowd prayed and saluted Haymaker. The Emerald Society filled the air with the sounds of bagpipes and drums.
