Morgue Workers Caught Sleeping on Job: Inspector

Cook County employees suspended after surprise inspection

Investigators say overnight workers at the Cook County morgue were caught sleeping and watching a Bruce Lee movie.

Inspector General Patrick Blanchard released a report Tuesday on the surprise inspection. It notes that one worker was found asleep at her desk, while two others were watching the martial arts movie on a county computer.

Blanchard says a subsequent investigation determined that those actions weren't isolated incidents. The workers were intake attendants at the Cook County medical examiner's office.

One worker was suspended for 25 days, while another got a five-day suspension. The report says the third employee hasn't yet been disciplined.

The inspector general's report comes after the morgue came under scrutiny due to problems with overcrowding and bodies piling up. The county has since hired a new medical examiner.
