Milwaukee Marathon Mismarks Race Route, Adds Extra Miles

Several runners participating in the recent Milwaukee Running Festival may have run "an extra mile or two," according to Chris Ponteri, the race director.

Ponteri blamed the extra mile count during the Nov. 6 marathon on the movement of cones along race routes.

"It appears that race cones were kicked over by a bystander," Ponteri said in a Facebook post. "We will be providing refunds to any runners who may have been impacted," he added.

Several runners, however, said that the extra mileage had nothing to do with the cones being kicked out of place.

"I had about 27 miles on my watch like so many others," wrote runner Katie Mace on the Facebook post. "It had nothing to do with the cone at the turn around. The mile markers were off on every single mile along the course."

"I was not impacted by the cones on the trail and still came out over 27 miles," added runner Justin Palmqvist.

The Milwaukee Running Festival Marathon is qualifier for the 2017 Boston Marathon. It was not immediately clear how the race's results will impact those runners wishing to qualify.

In 2015, the Bangkok half-marathon accidentally added an extra four miles to its race route. That same year, the Big Wild Life Marathon in Anchorage was .96 mile short of the official marathon distance of 26.2 miles.
