Person Fatally Hit by Train Near Elmwood Park, Major Delays Expected: Metra

Details on what happened weren't immediately released but riders were told to expect extensive delays

Metra trains in both directions were halted near Elmwood Park during rush hour Monday due to a "pedestrian incident" involving a Metra equipment train, the agency said.

The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. on the Milwaukee District-West line, officials said.

A spokesperson for Metra confirmed a 32-year-old man from Elmwood Park was killed in the incident. Officials said an investigation remained ongoing but noted that the train involved was empty and wasn't supposed to stop at the station.

Witnesses said they saw a man walk up to the tracks while an oncoming train's horn sounded.

"The corner of the train clipped him, and he spun around, hit the ground," said witness Debra Miller. "And he was just lifeless. I mean, it was just horrible. I’m still pretty traumatized by it."

Trains were stopped for about two hours and were still operating with significant delays after 10 a.m.

The North Central Service line was also affected at River Grove.
