Men Accused of Stealing $60,000 Worth of Detergent

Two men have been charged with stealing a semi-trailer Saturday, which was loaded with $60,000 worth of laundry detergent in southwest suburban Orland Park.

Omar Daraghma, 30, and Theair Kartoum, 25, were each charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, according to a release from Orland Park police.

A trucking company in southwest suburban Bolingbrook called police about 10 a.m. on Saturday saying one of their semi-trailers was stolen and taken to the Oak Forest area, the release said.

The trailer’s owner cited a surveillance video that showed it being pulled by a white semi-tractor and leaving the lot at 12:48 a.m. that same day, police said.

Oak Forest police found the trailer in the 15500 block of 70th Court in Orland Park, where it was backed up to a loading dock, the release said, and Orland Park police were called to the scene.

Officers found two men in the trailer, which had $60,000 worth of laundry detergent inside, police said. The men said they were being paid $100 each to unload the trailer but wouldn’t say who hired them, police said.

A Darien resident who owns the attached white semi-tractor had parked it in a lot on Frontage Road in Bolingbrook, police said.

Daraghma, of the 8000 block of Thomas Street in southwest suburban Justice, and Kartou, of the 7900 block of Nagle Avenue in southwest suburban Burbank, were given a choice to be held on a $50,000 recognizance bond with electronic monitoring or in jail, with a $20,000 bond, the release said.

They will next appear in court on Feb. 18.
