Memorial Planned for Woman Killed in Stage Collapse

Activist's life to be celebrated during public memorial

A local memorial service has been set to remember the life of a 29- year-old Chicago woman killed in the Indiana State Fair stage collapse earlier this month.

Christina Santiago was one of seven who died when a gust as strong as 70 mph caused a stage rigging to fall onto the crowd before an Aug. 13 Sugarland concert in Indianapolis.

Santiago's wife, Alisha Marie Brennon, also was critically injured during the state collapse.

The service will be held next Saturday, Sept. 10, at 1 p.m. at the Chicago History Museum, 1601 N. Clark St., according to the Howard Brown Health Center. It is open to the public.

Santiago managed programming for the Lesbian Community Care Project at Howard Brown and also served on the board there.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Brennon & Santiago Assistance Fund to support expenses and the Amigas Latinas memorial fund in Santiago's honor.

Howard Brown and the Lesbian Community Care Project also are collecting donations for two funds, one providing assistance to Santiago's relatives and the other supporting the work of LCCP.

A funeral service for Santiago was held Aug. 18 in her New York hometown.
