The brother of Loyola student Mutahir Rauf, who was killed in an attempted robbery near campus, spoke at the memorial service

A memorial service was held Tuesday for Loyola student Mutahir Rauf, who was killed Friday night in an attempted robbery near campus.

Rauf's older brother Mokaram Rauf spoke on behalf of the family at the memorial service and called for peace and an end to gun violence. Rauf's younger brother was with him during the attempted robbery but was unharmed.

Mokaram Rauf also spoke about the community coming together to mourn his brother and expressed his gratitude for their support. He said it was an example of all races and religions coming together to mourn.

Mutahir Rauf and his younger brother were walking together near the Loyola University campus Friday night when two men approached them, showed a weapon and demanded their belongings. Rauf believed the weapon was fake and tried to reach for it when the offender shot him in the head and chest.

Mokaram Rauf said his brother was studying pre-medicine at Loyola because he wanted to help other people. He said he feels only sadness for this incident and no anger.

The memorial service was held Tuesday morning in Piper Hall on Loyola University's Lake Shore campus.

The university will also host an interfaith prayer service for non-violence at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Mundelein Auditorium.
