March for Justice Held After 2 Killed in Back of the Yards Shooting

A march for justice took place Monday evening in Chicago’s Back of the Woods neighborhood one week after a pregnant woman and her mother were killed in a shooting in the area.

Family and friends took to the streets in honor of Patricia Chew, 23, and Lolita Wells, 46, the women killed in the shooting. Chew's 11-month-old infant and two other men were also wounded in the shooting.

The march happened hours after Chicago's Black Caucus called for the firing of Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy.

Fifteen members from the city’s Black Caucus appeared at City Hall for a press conference where they demanded Chicago's top cop be fired.

"Supt. McCarthy has had five years, he has failed," said Ald. Roderick, chairman of the Black Caucus.

The mayor's office said in a statement that it "supports the work and commitment of Superintendent McCarthy and the 12,500 sworn men and women of the Chicago Police Department."

Alderman Willie Cochran, who lead the Monday march, said he believes Chicago's violence problem is larger than McCarthy.

"The new super is not the answer," Cochran said. "The problem needs more than just a superintendent."

Funerals for the two women killed in the Back of the Yards shooting will be held on Wednesday. Police have yet to make any arrests over the shooting.

Meanwhile, McCathy is expected to attend a budget hearing with city council on Tuesday.
