Man Rescued From Lake Michigan by Veteran Cop

The man was unable to get out of the water due to the ice onshore

A man is in serious condition after being rescued from Lake Michigan by a police officer on Sunday afternoon near Oak Street Beach.

It appears the 58-year-old man decided to enter the water, but he was unable to get back out due to the ice onshore.

A 21-year veteran of the Chicago police, Wadell Hardy, was one of the first people on the scene at about 1 p.m. Hardy spotted the man and was able to pull him partially out of the water before rescue crews arrived.

"Once I got ahold of his arms, he was confident I wasn't going to let go, and I didn't," Hardy said.

The rescued man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition.
