Man Killed After Attacking Police

Police are involved in a shooting on the West Side

A man was shot to death after he tried to disarm and attack an officer on the West Side, Wednesday morning.

Police say two officers were on routine patrol in the North Austin neighborhood around 1:20 a.m. when they noticed the passengers of a vehicle throwing things out of the window.

Reports indicate the officers attempted to curb the vehicle, and although at first it did not stop, it finally pulled over in the 5200 block of West Kamerling Avenue.

At that point, most of the occupants ran off, but one of them attacked an officer to try to disarm him, according to a statement from Police.

"A struggle ensued, at which time the weapon discharged, fatally striking the offender," police said.

The man was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Both officers were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the incident.
