Man Fatally Shoots Ex-Girlfriend In Front of Her 2 Children: Police

Myron Mason, 33, was charged late Wednesday with one count of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Mechelle Lewis

A 28-year-old woman was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend while in a car with her two children Tuesday night in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, police said.

The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. in the 7200 block of South Bennett Avenue where a woman, later identified as Mechelle Lewis, was sitting in a parked minivan with two children inside. Police said the Lewis' former boyfriend, Myron Mason, walked up to the car and fatally shot her before taking the children -- an 8-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy-- and driving away in a light-colored sedan.

Mason, 33, drove to the the 7400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue where he called police and told officers where he was. Authorities said he and the children were then taken into custody. Mason was charged late Wednesday with one count of first-degree murder, officials said.

The two children were not injured, officials said.  It was not immediately clear if Mason is the father of the kids.

Lewis' employer, Yolanda Travis, said Lewis worked as a manager at a McDonald's restaurant in the city.

"I was greatly saddened to learn about the tragic passing of Mechelle Lewis," Travis said in a statement. "She was such a beautiful person, and will be missed. My entire team is mourning the loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family. Our deepest sympathies go out to them."

Authorities said a weapon was discovered at the scene of the shooting and the incident appeared to be domestic-related.
