Man Dies After Diving into Lake Michigan to Avoid Police

Police say he was under water for about 45 minutes

A man was pronounced dead Wednesday night after he jumped into Lake Michigan, reportedly to flee officers.

Chicago police approached Amit A. Patel, 31, of Edison, N.J. to confirm his identity at about 8:11 p.m. when he plunged into the cold waters near the 600 block of North Lake Shore Drive, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Officers were trying to close the park for the night and clear out loiterers.

Police called emergency crews to rescue him out of the lake. He was under water for about 45 minutes, police said, and was found near Olive Park Beach on the Near North Side.

He was first taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in “extremely critical” condition, according to the Sun-Times. He died at 9:30 p.m.
