Man Charged in Hit-And-Run That Killed Pregnant Woman

22-year-old Silvestre Garcia struck and killed Karla Leanos, who was 7 months pregnant, police say. After she was hit, emergency personnel delivered her baby, whose condition is stable.

A 22-year-old man faces several charges after police say he was the driver that struck a pregnant mother of three in a hit-and-run crash.

Silvestre Garcia, of the 2700 block of South Harding Ave. in South Lawndale, was charged Sunday with two felonies and two misdemeanors related to DUI and leaving the scene of an accident, according to police. Bond was set at $750,000 Sunday, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

Authorities say 26-year-old Karla Leanos was crossing the street on the 4200 block of West Ogden in North Lawndale around 10 p.m. Thursday night when Garcia struck her. Garcia was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed in a 2008 Chrysler and did not initially stop, police say.

Leanos, of the 3000 block of South Keeler, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m. After she was hit, emergency personnel delivered the baby boy, police said. The newborn’s condition was stabilized Friday morning.

Rick Page of Rick Page of Chi City Cycles, whose surveillance cameras captured the incident, said the impact was strong enough to knock off the woman's boots.

"That is a miracle baby," Page added.

A friend said Leanos also had three other children.

"I've been crying on and off all day to be honest," the friend said. "I'm heartbroken for her kids, her family. A tragedy that she lost her life and a miracle and a blessing that her baby survived."
