Man Charged for Setting Fire to $1M Boat

A 34-year-old man was reportedly charged after he set a luxury boat on fire Friday, officials said.

Julio Chavez Jr. was charged Saturday with felony arson and burglary after he was found inside a burning boat in Burnham Harbor Friday afternoon, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Firefighters were called to the luxury craft, named Lacerne, after it caught on fire in Slip 7 at the harbor around 4 p.m.

Fire officials found Chavez, who is not the owner of the boat, below deck and turned him over to the police where he was taken into custody, according to a tweet from Chicago Fire Media.

The vessel was estimated to be worth about $1 million and appeared to have suffered damage to its main cabin, the Tribune reported.
