Man Charged With Dismembering Champaign Woman Sentenced

A 15-year prison sentence has been handed to one of six people charged with dismembering a missing Champaign woman whose remains were found last year in a central Illinois lake.

Davion Hedrick trembled Tuesday through most of his hour-long sentencing hearing for taking part in the dismemberment of 24-year-old Ashley Gibson, the News-Gazette in Champaign reports.

Assistant State's Attorney Troy Lozar described the 27-year-old Hedrick the "ringleader" of six men who cut up and disposed of the body of Gibson after she died of a drug overdose. Hedrick told Judge Tom Difanis he panicked when Gibson died and felt that if he called police, they would assume he had caused her death.

Four others involved in the dismemberment have been sentenced to seven years in prison; a fifth has not had his case resolved.
