Man Carried Pipe Bomb in Backpack, says Cops

A bomb squad disabled the device

One misstep could have stopped an Arlington Heights man in his tracks.

An officer stopped Ryan Barton, 20, while he was walking down the street last week to ask him about recent car burglaries in the suburb, said Wheeling Police Chief Bill Benson.

Police determined he wasn't involved in those crimes. However, they arrested him for a dynamite discovery in his backpack.

Barton voluntarily opened his bag, and the officer spotted a pipe bomb. He admitted he carried it around for two years but didn't explain why, Benson said.

The Cook County Bomb Squad disabled the explosive. Barton was arrested on a weapons count.
