Man Breaks Into Parents' House, Leads Police on 25-Minute Chase

A man led police on a 25-minute foot chase after breaking into his parent’s home in west suburban Riverside Friday morning.

Officers were called to a house in the 300 block of Southcote Road at 11:32 a.m. for reports of an unwanted man trespassing, according to a statement from Riverside police. The caller told authorities their son, who had previously been removed from the house and was no longer living there, had forced his way back in.

Officers arrived to find 25-year-old Michael C. Marchuk in “a drug-induced state” in his former bedroom in the basement, police said. Riverside police had been called to the home two weeks earlier to tell him his parents no longer wanted him at the house and issue him an official trespassing warning.

The first responding officer Friday morning told Marchuk his parents didn’t want him there, and the man initially said he would cooperate with police but that he had to tie his shoe first, according to police. When Marchuk bent down to tie his shoe, he lunged at the officer and shouldered him, knocking him to the ground.

He then ran away through the house and the backyard, police said. Police chased him but initially lost him in the adjacent backyards.

Marchuk led police on a 25-minute search and chase from yard to yard in the surrounding neighborhood before officers tackled him and wrestled him to the ground., police said. He continued to resist and batter officers as they transported him to a squad car.

He suffered minor cuts and scratches during the chase but refused medical treatment, according to police.

Marchuk, who was staying at a friend’s apartment in the 8000 block of Edgewater in North Riverside, was charged with criminal trespassing, two counts of resisting arrest and battery to a police officer, police said. His criminal history includes 16 prior arrests, and he is currently on probation for a 2014 felony drug arrest.

A judge on Saturday ordered Marchuk held on a $10,000 bond, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office. He is due back in court Tuesday.
