Man Accused of Stealing From Mall Charity Jar

A Chicago man has been charged with stealing a charity collection jar from a store at Golf Mill Mall in north suburban Niles.

Niles Police say the robbery happened on Nov. 11 at the customer service desk inside the mall.

James J. Pedro, 55, is accused of putting the collection box -- which contained about $200 -- inside his jacket and walking out the front door.

The theft was captured on a surveillance camera and police say Pedro, a regular customer of the store, was contacted and voluntarily surrendered. He's charged with one misdemeanor count of theft.

Pedro was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 24.
