An 84-year-old man was assaulted and robbed Friday morning at a train station in Hammond, Indiana, police said.

The man had just purchased a newspaper around 8:39 a.m. from inside the NICTD Hammond South Shore station, at 4531 Hohman Ave., and was walking on the boarding platform when the attack occurred, police said.

He was physically assaulted and robbed of his wallet. He sustained minor injuries, police said, but declined medical treatment.

After the robbery, the suspect ran from the station and fled south on Johnson Avenue, police said.

The suspect is described as a tall, stocky black male in his mid-20s to early-30s. The man was wearing a sleeveless gray T-shirt and dark jeans with embroidered designs sewn into the rear pockets.

Hammond Police deployed a police K9 unit to search the area. They are asking anyone with information about the incident or the suspect's identity to call the NICTD Transit Police at 219-398-6000.
