Man, 72, Dead After Hit-and-Run in North Suburbs, Police Say

A 72-year-old man was killed Thursday night in a hit-and-run accident in the north suburbs, police said.

The deadly crash occurred about 6:24 p.m. near Greenwood Avenue and Betty Terrace in Niles, police said.

“As the pedestrian entered into the northbound lanes of Greenwood vehicles stopped to avoid the pedestrian,” police said in a statement. “However as the pedestrian continued to cross the intersection a white pickup or sports utility vehicle struck the pedestrian in the curb lane.”

Another vehicle traveling behind the white SUV struck it from behind, police said. The SUV fled northbound on Greenwood Avenue and the second vehicle stayed on the scene to help the mortally injured man. The 72-year-old later pronounced dead at Lutheran General Hospital shortly after 7 p.m., police said.

The NORTAF Major Crash Assistance Team will assist authorities in the investigation.

Anyone who was traveling on Greenwood Avenue around the time of the accident is asked to contact the Niles Police Department at 8437-588-6500.

Northbound Greenwood Avenue will remain closed until the investigation is complete.
