Macy's Flagship Building Could Be Getting a Rooftop Deck: Report

The building housing Macy's iconic State Street flagship in Chicago’s Loop could be getting a rooftop deck, according to a report.

The Chicago Tribune reports the company gave a developer the right to build a rooftop deck, which might include food and drinks, an enclosed bar and space for events.

The company had earlier given the developer, Toronto-based Brookfield Asset Management, floors 8 through 14 in the building, which reports indicate could become office spaces, bars or retail spots.

Reports of the retailer's plans to sell some of the building began circulating in early 2017 as Macy's planned a downsize of store presence company-wide.

Questions initially emerged on the future of the iconic Walnut Room, located on the seventh floor of the flagship building at 111 N. State St. But the company quickly assured fans that the restaurant was not going anywhere.

“Of course, the Walnut Room will remain as it is a cherished tradition,” spokeswoman Andrea Schwartz said in a statement in April.

It was the first restaurant ever opened in a department store when what was then Chicago-based Marshall Field's opened its doors in 1907.
