MLB Trade Deadline Live Blog: White Sox Stand Pat

UPDATE: 3:15 p.m.

The Chicago Cubs did make a move before the MLB trade deadline, acquiring reliever Joe Smith from the Los Angeles Angels, but the Chicago White Sox ended up standing pat and didn't make any moves.

The White Sox had discussions with the Boston Red Sox surrounding Chris Sale, and they had also been listening to offers for players like David Robertson, Brett Lawrie, and Melky Cabrera, but none of the deals came to pass as the non-waiver deadline came and went.

In the weeks leading up to the trade deadline, the White Sox grappled with the decision on whether to be buyers or sellers, and they ended up opting to stand pat instead. The only move they made came over the weekend, as they sent left-handed reliever Zach Duke to the St. Louis Cardinals for a minor league outfield prospect.

As for the Cubs, the vast majority of their deals came well before the trade deadline. They acquired two relievers in the run-up to the deadline, getting Mike Montgomery from the Seattle Mariners and Aroldis Chapman from the New York Yankees in separate transactions.

Adding Smith gives the Cubs another option against right-handed hitters down the stretch, and could open the door for either Carl Edwards Jr. or Trevor Cahill to be stretched out for a spot start as the Cubs look to keep their starting rotation fresh.

UPDATE: 1:24 p.m.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Chicago White Sox will hold onto both Chris Sale and Jose Quintana after Monday's trade deadline, barring something unforeseen.

The White Sox were reportedly talking with the Boston Red Sox about a Sale deal, and the Los Angeles Dodgers have also been rumored to be a potential suitor for his services. Neither deal ever came close, and it appears Sale will remain with the team at least until the offseason.

UPDATE: 12:25 p.m.

After earlier reports linked the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers on a James Shields-for-Yasiel Puig swap, Bruce Levine of 670 the Score says that the reports were "false."

In addition, Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Chicago Cubs may not be done looking for bullpen help. Los Angeles Angels reliever Joe Smith is rumored to be on the Cubs' radar, with a 3.83 ERA and six saves so far this season for the Halos.

UPDATE: 12:00 p.m.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired outfielder Josh Reddick and pitcher Rich Hill from the Oakland Athletics.

That deal could have serious implications for both the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox. The Cubs were rumored to be contenders for Reddick's services as they look for another left-handed bat for their lineup, but it appears as though they'll miss out on him.

As for the White Sox, they could be looking at acquiring Yasiel Puig in a trade, and if the Dodgers officially acquire Reddick, then Puig would be even more expendable in a deal.

UPDATE: 11:45 a.m.

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the White Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers are talking trade, and outfielder Yasiel Puig could be one of the center pieces of the deal.

Puig, who has worn out his welcome in Los Angeles and has been the subject of trade rumors for several months, could be on the Sox radar as they look to move pitcher James Shields, whom they acquired earlier this season in a swap with the San Diego Padres.

With a .260 batting average and seven home runs this season, Puig hasn't been lighting the world on fire, and his off-field behavior isn't helping matters either. Reports have swirled for years now that the Dodgers aren't satisfied with his presence in the clubhouse, and with his downturn in production after his outstanding rookie year, it isn't surprising that they could be looking to move him out of town.

UPDATE: 10:00 a.m.

According to multiple reports, the Chicago White Sox are engaging in trade negotiations around starting pitcher Chris Sale.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale and MLB Network's Ken Rosenthal are both reporting Monday morning that the White Sox and Boston Red Sox engaged in talks late into the night Sunday about sending the ace hurler to Boston. The Red Sox have one of baseball's deepest farm systems, and they'd have to part with several of their top prospects to make a deal happen.

Despite those talks, it doesn't appear that any deal is imminent before the 3 p.m. deadline. According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, there is a "less than 5 percent chance" that Sale is moved in a trade before the deadline.

According to reports, the White Sox are looking for at least four prospects, and that list would start with two of Boston's best. Second baseman Yoan Moncada, largely considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball, would almost certainly have to be part of a deal, as would center fielder Andrew Benintendi.

The latter player could conceviably make the White Sox roster to start next season, keeping Adam Eaton in right field and giving the team a significant upgrade both on offense and defensively.
