Lucas Museum Could Be Headed to San Francisco: Report

Efforts to keep the George Lucas Museum in Chicago may be in jeopardy as the project’s organizers have reportedly resumed talks with officials in the filmmaker’s hometown of San Francisco.

A spokeswoman for Mayor Rahm Emanuel issued a statement late Sunday, saying in part, “The museum will go elsewhere if the misguided lawsuit filed by Friends of The Parks is not quickly settled or dismissed.”

The statement came on the heels of multiple reports over the weekend that San Francisco city leaders were pitching a new site for the highly anticipated museum at the naval base at Treasure Island, which is already approved for redevelopment.

A previous proposal near the city’s Presidio was met by opposition from activists, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The newspaper also reports that the group behind the museum is exploring sites in Los Angeles, as well.

The news does not bode well for Chicago’s bid, which is now stalled in legal battles as environmentalists put up a fierce fight against the proposals to build a museum along the city’s lakefront.
